SCOPE OF PHARMACY & CAREER OF PHARMACIST
Before going to explain the scope of pharmacy, we should know the basics about pharmacy and pharmacists.
Pharmacy:
Most people think the meaning of a pharmacy as a drug store where drug is sold. But it is a branch of science and art that is concerned with the preparation and standardization of drugs.
Pharmacists:
Pharmacists are persons who prepare, compound, and dispense drugs upon written prescription by registered medical practitioners such as physicians, dentists, etc. Pharmacists are responsible for the preparation of the dosage forms of drugs, such as tablets, capsules, liquid, lotion, ointment, cream, sterile preparations, etc. Pharmacists play a great role to ensure safe medicine practices by working with doctors, pharmaceutical companies, and research labs. So we can say pharmacists are the front line for ensuring individuals receive proper drugs.
TYPES OF PHARMACY COURSES:
- Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm): The duration of this course is 3 years.
- Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm): The duration of this course is 4 years
- Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm): The duration of this course is 2 years.
SALARY:
Starting salary for a fresher in this field may be Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 35,000 per month in India. After gaining experience maximum salary can be up to 5 crores per annum but not limited.
SCOPE OF PHARMACY JOB IN 2023:
1. Scope of pharmacy as a Government Job:
Govt. job can be got by clearing the competitive exam. Conducted by State Governments, SSC, and UPSC from time to time. Some government jobs are listed below.
- Drug inspector (central, state)
- Drug control PCI
- Scientist in CSIR, ICMR
- Government analyst
2. Scope of pharmacy as Wholesale & retail job:
A pharmacist can start their own business by opening a retail/ wholesale drug store to serve the community.
3. Scope of pharmacy as an Industrial job:

Graduate and diploma pharmacy personnel can get easily in private as well as in government sectors like railway, army, ESI hosp. but might be fighting for in government job. The pharmacist plays a major role in clinical trial planning, identification evaluation & monitoring of the potential drug interaction, and adverse drug reaction & assessment of them.
6. Scope of pharmacy as Pharmaceutical Journalism job:
Pharmacy personnel can get jobs as journalists in pharmacy journals or magazines. Another way to earn money is by becoming a freelancer writer/pharmaceutical & health care content writer.
7. Scope of pharmacy as Consultant (audit ) pharmacy job:
Consultants provide services & solutions to pharmaceutical companies to enhance productivity with regulatory compliance. They make it competent to fight the audits. After getting experience pharmaceutical industries can be part of audit consultant.
8. Scope of pharmacy as Nuclear pharmacy Job:
Nuclear pharmacy is a new specialized branch of pharmacy for compounding and dispensing of radioactive materials for use in nuclear medicine procedures. By “tagging” the suitable radioactive substance to some compound to carry the radioactive material to the desired site of the body.
9. Scope of pharmacy as State PSC, UPSC, SSC, and banking jobs:
There are several govt. job whose eligible criteria are to appear in the exam. is graduation. B. Pharm is also a graduate course. So they can be qualified by giving entrance exams for Bank PO, SSC, State PSC, and Civil services exams.
10. Set up your own pharmaceutical company:
You can set up your own manufacturing or marketing company after getting some experience & knowledge of pharmaceutical industries.
11. Pharmacovigilance (PV)
pharmacovigilance is the most demanding job now a day in the field of pharmaceuticals. it is also known as drug safety, which is the pharmaceutical science relating to the “collection, detection, assessment, monitoring, and prevention” of adverse effects with pharmaceutical products.
During the pandemic period covid-19, the pharma, healthcare, and IT sector were considered as the most reliable and evergreen fields for carriers.
